Betting odds essentially represent the probability of a particular event happening and determine the potential payout associated with that event.

When betting in sport, we usually talk about three main types of betting odds formats: fractional, decimal, and American (moneyline).

Fractional Betting Odds

Traditionally odds were expressed as a fraction. It is the probability as perceived by the bookies of a certain outcome. For example, if the odds were 4/1 – said as “4 to 1” – for a football game, say, Spain against Italy, that would mean the bookies expected that if the two teams played four games, Spain would win three times and Italy would win once.

Fractional odds are commonly used in horse racing and other sports events in the UK. They display your potential profit relative to your stake. So the fractional odds of 4/1 mean that you stand to win €4 for every €1 bet.

In terms of what you bet and what you win, If you placed a €10 bet on these 4/1 odds on Italy to win, and Italy did win, your winnings would be your bet multiplied by the fraction. ie €10 multiplied by 4/1. You would win €40. If the odds were 9/2 you would win (€10×9)/2=€45.

If you win you will also get your bet back, so if you bet €10 on 4/1, you would be given €50 – your €40 of winnings plus your original €10 bet.

Take care to get these odds the right way around. If the odds were the other way around with the smaller number first, such as 3/5, you would get back 3/5 of your €10 bet, or just €6. ie, your winnings would be less than your bet! This is calle “odds on” – you are placing the odds on the favourite (the one expected to win), which is not much of a gamble. The idea is to pick the one which isn’t expected to win. The higher the number the better, the more you bet the more you might win, but the risk of losing goes up, and what you are likely to lose goes up.

Decimal Betting Odds

Decimal odds are the easiest to understand as they represent the total payout including your original stake. For example, if the decimal odds are 3.50, it means that you will receive $3.50 for every dollar wagered.

They are simply the fractional odds expressed as a decimal. but with with a ‘1’ added, because it’s calculating your returns – it is including your bet in the number rather than adding it after. So the original fractional bet might have been 5/2. If you bet €10 and won, that would have given you €25 plus your €10 back, so a total of €35 whould be handed over to you.

As a decimal bet it is simply multiplied out. It would be shown as 5/2+1 or 2.5+1 = 3.50. So on a win, multiply your €10 bet by 3.50 – and you will be given… €35.

“Odds on” would be shown as a number less than 1.00. Betting on the favourite isn’t a wager – it’s a donation.

American Betting Odds

American odds are not surprisingly prevalent in the United States. At first they seem complicated, but they are just a different way of saying the same thing. Instead of giving you a multiplier, they tell you how much money you need to bet in order to win €100 or how much you could potentially win with a €100 wager. The first is a positive number, the second a negative number.

What does this mean?

A positive number will be more than 100, eg +150. If you bet €100 (which you will get back if you win), and the odds are +150 (which would be 15/1 or 16.00 as fractional or decimal odds). So in this example, if you bet €100 on +150 odds and win, you would get back €150 – winnings of €50 on top of your €100 bet. A €10 bet would pay you €15 back.

Positive numbers denote underdogs – the team expected to lose.

The negative numbers represent favourites. So if the odds are -115, this is telling you how much you would have to pay in order to get €100 – a loss for you. The negative numbers are odds on. To work out what you would receive, divide your bet by the number as a decimal. So a €10 bet at odds of -150 would be €10/1.50 = €6.67. You would be given back less than what you bet.
